DORSET’S Kevin Spurgeon was last night counting the cost of a poor first round that denied him a top-10 finish at the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open in Switzerland.

The 54-year-old Ferndown touring professional opened his account with a two-over-par 72 on Friday before improving each day with a 68 and a 67 for a share of 27th place.

“I left just myself too much to do after the first round,” explained Spurgeon, who was just three shots shy of his third top-10 of the season after yesterday’s final day.

“I had a great second round that should have been even better,” said Spurgeon, who is sponsored by Deanside Lettings.

“I had four putts lip out, so I should have been looking at least a 66 if I had the rub of the green.”

Starting the final day on level par, Spurgeon raced to three under after just four holes. He birdied the 334-yard second, and chalked up a three on the par-five 480-yard fourth hole.

“I took a three wood off the tee that left me a 230-yard shot into the green,” added Spurgeon.

“I managed to take out the green-side bunker, which is quite a carry for a rescue club, and left myself an eight-footer for eagle.

“Overall I’m very pleased with my game and enjoy every tournament. I’ve earned more than 50,000 Euros already I am still on course for top 30 finish.”

Spurgeon, who earned a cheque for 1,604 Euros, slipped two places to 21st in the money list.

South African Richard Bland won the 33,000 Euros first prize when he beat American Bob Boyd on the second hole of a sudden-death play-off after both players had finished on 11-under-par in regular play.
