DORSET representatives claimed most of the plaudits on the opening day of the Bowlaway Bournemouth Open yesterday.

Although Rosemary Lester and Mike Beales made an early exit in the mixed pairs event, it was fellow Dorset duo Julia Eatwell and Michael Hutley who sent them spinning out of the competition at the first hurdle.

Pam Harrison and Chris Dowding stormed into round two alongside Julie Hudson and Chris Daniels and Kris and Kevin Saunders, while former champions Anne Coward and Neil Asten also made progress.

Elsewhere, Hutley and Daniels lived up to their favourite billing in the men’s pairs, with the reigning champions joined in the second round by Ringwood’s John Thomas and Peter Ward.

Kent duo Richard Fensome and Chris Kane won through 22-17, despite dropping a hot shot at Boscombe Cliff, while former England under-25 captain Nicky Jones and Scott Edwards came through 20-19 against father and son David and Stephen Snell of Wootton Bassett.

Scotland’s Stephen Conchar and Rae Graham, meanwhile, crashed out 25-24 to Jim Flexman and Phil Pugh.
