DORSET swim star Amelia Maughan smashed her personal best on her way to bronze at the European Youth Olympic Festival – but was far from happy.

The 13-year-old Bournemouth Dolphins star was ranked second going into the 50m freestyle final in Tampere yesterday and had set her sights on replicating her gold medal performance from the 100m event on Tuesday.

Maughan touched the wall in a new lifetime’s best time of 26.57 seconds but was pipped to the post by France’s Lea Wissocq, who took gold, and silver medallist Giedre Grigonyte from Lithuania.

“I felt I could have got at least silver so I am a little bit disappointed,” said Maughan.

“The time is nice and the fact that I picked up another medal is pleasing but when you are ranked second, that’s what you should be aiming for.”

The Talbot Heath School pupil is the youngest member of the Team GB squad and will still be eligible for selection on the team at the next festival in Trabzon, Turkey, in two years’ time.

And with the inaugural Youth Olympics set to take place in Singapore next year, Maughan insists she has laid down a firm marker for the future.

“I’ve swam against the best in my age group now and hopefully they will remember me,” said added. “I’m still learning all the time and I’m sure there will be a bit more pressure on me next time, but I’m looking forward to it.”
