STAR player Danny Hollands could leave Dean Court on a free transfer next month after reluctantly handing Cherries a 14-day notice to pay his outstanding wages.

Hollands yesterday confirmed his decision, which means he would be forced to walk away from the League Two club if 50 per cent of his May wages, which were due yesterday, are not paid by June 12.

The former Chelsea reserve team skipper, who has also captained Cherries with distinction on numerous occasions, revealed he was left with little other option because of his personal financial situation.

But the midfielder, a vital member of Eddie Howe’s team, is still hopeful his wish to stay with Cherries will come to fruition.

He told the Echo: “I have put in my notice but it wasn’t for the want of wanting to leave.

“It was more for the fact that the decision was put on me because I haven’t got any money and I haven’t been paid.

“We have received the final 40 per cent of last month’s wages, so I’ve got that now, but I’d already put the 14-day notice in so the club have got until June 12.”

Hollands added: “I hope it doesn’t come to that (leaving) because I want to stay.

“I feel next season will be good for all of us. I feel it’s the strongest squad we’ve had and that we can do well, but it’s a decision put upon me.

“Financially, I was down to almost no money and I felt I couldn’t go on like it.

“Hopefully the club will get sold and everything will be all good for next season.”

Hollands is likely to attract interest from a host of clubs given his fine form at the end of last season and Cherries manager Howe does not want to lose such an important player.

“I desperately don’t want to lose Danny and hope the situation can be resolved before that happens,” Howe told the Echo. “He’s going to be a pivotal player next season.”

The Echo revealed on Monday that some of Cherries’ players had contacted the PFA – the players’ union – about the wages situation, although it is understood that Hollands is, so far, the only player to serve notice on the club.

The Echo understands Cherries’ players received the remainder of their April wages after the club got the money they were due from Southampton after former Cherries youth player Matt Paterson triggered an appearance-related clause in the deal which took him to St Mary’s in 2006.
