CHERRIES legend Steve Fletcher is hoping to help mould young recruit Steve Hutchings into the club’s next top targetman.

Teenager Hutchings, along with fellow youth team star George Webb, was handed a three-month professional contract by boss Eddie Howe earlier this month.

And with Cherries’ attacking options limited given their small squad, Hutchings is likely to be given an opportunity to impress during pre-season.

Veteran campaigner Fletcher, Cherries’ first-choice frontman, is looking forward to helping his young team-mate improve his game when he joins the senior ranks.

“I haven’t seen him in a game situation but he’s got half a chance from what I’ve seen of him in training,” said Fletcher, who likened Hutchings’ stature to that of former Cherries favourite Sam Vokes.

“He just needs a bit of work because he’s a bit raw.

“But hopefully with Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall helping him, he’s got a chance of going on to become an established first team player.”

Fletcher, Cherries’ record appearance-maker, added: “He’s got all the attributes and Eddie likes the young players and wants to bring them through.

“At a club like ours, you need people like him coming through because there’s no money to buy anyone.

“As long as he comes in and works hard and shows the right attitude and effort, I’m sure Eddie will help him.

“He’s got a great opportunity because he’s got the backing of the manager – that’s a huge positive for the boy – and it’s in his own hands.”

The Echo was yesterday unable to contact Cherries co-owner Paul Baker for an update on the club’s takeover talks or any other off-field issues.
