FERNDOWN skipper Nick Aubin has hailed teen sensation Sonny Wilkinson’s debut heroics in the Beckford Bowl as ‘one of the most incredible performances’ he has ever witnessed.
The reigning champions were staring defeat in the face before 16-year-old Wilkinson rattled off three successive birdies to win his match at the first extra hole and secure his team an 8-7 win at Lyme Regis.
“I’ve seen a lot of golf in my time, but that must have been one of the most incredible performances ever,” said Aubin.
“The way Sonny handled the pressure on his debut was amazing.”
Wilkinson was dormy two down before his birdie blitz secured Ferndown their narrow first-round victory.
He also won his morning foursomes with partner Scott Heap to give the visitors a 3-2 advantage at the halfway stage of the inter-club scratch match.
The other Ferndown singles winners were Heap, Matt Hector, Jake Broughton and Mark Balson.
Second round draw: Parkstone v Hockley, Broadstone v Brokenhurst Manor, Stoneham v Ferndown, Came Down v Knighton Heath.
