A FLURRY of goals at the start of the second half ended Cherries women’s cup run at the Third Round stage, with a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Charlton Atheltic.

23 places separated the two teams in the pyramid, with Charlton sitting atop of the Championship, two levels above Cherries’ current home of the National League Division One South West.

A six-minute spell saw Karin Muya’s double sandwiched by an own goal, before Charlton made sure of the result through Angela Addison, Melissa Johnson and Carla Humphrey.

It was Cherries' first time at this stage of the competition, haven beaten St Austell, Bridgwater, and Swindon to set up the tie.

Both Helen Bleazard and Molly Barron-Clark were unavailable, with Maisy Smith and Kelly Fripp taking their respective places in the starting line-up.

The visitors named an unchanged XI from the side victorious over Birmingham City in the FA WSL Cup last time out, indicating that they were treating Cherries with the utmost respect.

Both sides played the opening 45 minutes in a full-blooded style, frequently flying into sliding challenges to either win the ball or prevent dangerous attacks.

Abby Jones and Amber Treweek were frequently seen chucking their bodies in the path of passes, ensuring that there was no way through for their full-time opponents.

Cherries were adamant they should have had an opportunity to open scores from the spot after 16 minutes.

Gemma Hillier’s cross inside the box was blatantly blocked the outstretched hand of Addicks defender Elisha N’Dow, but despite the incident playing out right in front of official Jordan Lee, no penalty was awarded.

Charlton captain Kiera Skeels nodded just wide of the near post from a corner on 26 minutes, the Addicks’ best moment of the half up until that point.

The final action of the half produced the closest moment to a goal, with Olivia Venditto well positioned to clear a header off the line at a corner.

Hopes of a cupset after an even first period were quashed within the opening 15 minutes of the second half.

Cherries got close to clearing their lines a few times during the build-up to the opener, but were powerless to prevent Muya slipping in at the back post, Daniela Kosinska getting a touch to the shot.

After valiantly battling for 55 minutes, the floodgates opened after Charlton’s first.

Goal number two came minutes later, Katie James bundling into her own net in attempt to stop Muya’s cross.

Just after the hour mark, it would be three.

Substitute Addison must have thought she had scored with one of her first touches, her downwards header somehow kept out by Kosinska, who got down low to push the effort on to the post.

But Addison would get her goal, the attacker alert in the box to poke home unmarked and add further gloss to the scoreline.

There was still time for further Charlton strikes.

Johnson was quickest to react to a loose ball inside the Cherries box and poke home a fifth, before sub Carla Humphrey was on hand to turn in a sixth after Kosinska’s initial save on the stroke of added time.
