CHERRIES recorded their biggest win of the season at the unlikeliest of places, dispatching Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Dominic Solanke’s early opener was added to midway through the second period by Philip Billing and Marcos Senesi, giving Cherries a first win away at the Red Devils at the 11th attempt.

There was just the one change to the side victorious at Selhurst Park on Wednesday, with Marcus Tavernier restored the starting XI in place of Luis Sinisterra.

That essentially meant the side was reverted back to the team Andoni Iraola has settled on in recent weeks, all 11 players having started the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa the previous weekend.

Within five minutes, Cherries would be ahead. Lewis Cook was alert to a loose pass, fastening onto the ball and driving forward into the corner.

The central midfielder then looked up to pick Solanke across the face of goal, Cherries’ leading goalscorer glancing an effort through the legs of Harry Maguire and into the back of the net.

A stunned Manchester United looked to find an instant response, but were left frustrated.

Neto had to get a strong wrist to push Maguire’s looping header over the bar, whilst Illia Zabarnyi, Adam Smith, and Senesi were rushing to clear any ball that came near them.

The next side to have the ball in the back of the net would be Cherries.

Milos Kerkez’s in-swinging cross from the left found the head of Solanke, who was matched by Andre Onana in the Red Devils goal, Tavernier on hand to nod home the rebound.

But there were no celebrations for Cherries, as the official on the far side had already flagged Solanke for an offside offence.

The best chance in the remaining first-half action again fell to Cherries.

Once again Cook’s hustle to intercept the ball paid dividends, the former Leeds United midfielder slipping the ball into Solanke.

His shot across goal had beaten Onana, but was an inch too wide as it clanged off the post and away from danger.

The second half began in the same pattern, with Cherries having to defend frequent attacks from the home side.

Kerkez was flinging his body this-way and that-way to block two efforts, whilst goalkeeper Neto strongly punched away one of many corners.

But as the game entered the final quarter, Cherries started to connect with their punches.

Zabarnyi, who had been a rock throughout, stepped up the halfway line to win possession back, allowing Solanke to fashion the ball to Tavernier out wide.

Tavernier’s floated cross had only one target – substitute Billing, who ghosted between two defenders to head over the outstretched arm of Onana and into the back of the net.

The hosts still reeling from the second goal, the knockout blow came moments later.

After an initial corner was put out of play for another set-piece, Tavernier sent another cross deep into the Man United box, an unmarked Senesi scoring for the second time in the space of four days.

Cherries thought they had a fourth in added time. Their press robbed Maguire of the ball on the edge of his area, Solanke poking it away from the England centre-back, allowing sub Dango Ouattara to bundle past Onana.

However, VAR identified a handball offence by the Burkinabe, and the goal was chalked off.

At the time of writing, Cherries rise up to 13th in the Premier League table.
