FERNDOWN Otters' breaststroking double-act Naomi Vides and Fran Hughes catapulted themselves into the top 20 in Britain with a brace of fine swims at the British Championships and Olympic Trials in Sheffield.

Hughes, 15, and 13-year-old Vides arrived at Ponds Forge ranked 21st and 27th respectively in the women's 200m breaststroke.

But in the heats, Dorset's top two both recorded personal best times to surge into the B final.

National age group champion Vides's time in the evening heats was 2:37.55, Hughes's 2:38.57.

In the B final, held in the mornings, when times tend to be slower, Vides came fifth in 2:39.23 and Hughes sixth in 2:39.91.

With eight people in the A final and British number one Kirsty Balfour choosing not to swim due to her pre-selection for the Olympics, it means that Vides and Hughes are 14th and 15th in Britain in this event.

In the 100m breaststroke Vides came 22nd in 1:14.14 and Hughes 28th in 1:15.22.

Kim Rowles virtually matched her personal best time in the 200m individual medley to finish 32nd.

She was also 32nd in the 400m freestyle in 4:28.55 and 58th in the 200m freestyle (2:10.15).

Craig Freeman knocked over a second off his long course PB to come 49th in the 200m freestyle in 1:58.15.

Nicole Scott was 32nd in the women's 100m butterfly in 1:05.21 while British schools champion Chris Campbell was 49th in the men's 100m butterfly in 1:00.85.
