CHARLIE Daniels revealed Cherries had held an impromptu half-time team meeting at West Ham to discuss their aims for the season.

The visitors trailed 1-0 at the interval at London Stadium after Marko Arnautovic had netted a spot-kick, which Daniels felt was an “injustice”.

Nathan Ake was deemed to have fouled Chicharito by referee Stuart Attwell, who later turned down Cherries' appeals for a penalty after a David Brooks cross had appeared to strike the arm of Fabian Balbuena

But Daniels said dressing-room dialogue at the interval had spurred Cherries to a 2-1 comeback win thanks to goals from Callum Wilson and Steve Cook.

Daniels told the Daily Echo: “We felt a bit of injustice with the penalty but the referee gave it and he could only give what he saw.

“Then, there was the debatable penalty we should have had with the handball right at the end of the half, which he didn’t give.

“We didn’t grumble about it, we came into the changing room and discussed what we wanted our season to be.

“We said the next 45 minutes could have been a real decider about what we could achieve.

“West Ham is a place we needed to come and win if we wanted to move up to the next level. I think that showed with our second-half performance.”

Asked about the timing of the chat, the defender replied: “There was no time like the present. We knew if we won, we were right up there at the top of the table.

“That was a big incentive for us and we gathered ourselves together because we are a big team and a big unit together. We knew we needed to do something a bit special and I felt we did.

“In the second half, we showed our character and the way we could play. We opened them up and controlled the game through our central midfielders.

“It was a great goal by Callum. He was up there by himself and the turn, the drive, the touches he had and finish was so nice to see. I was so happy for him.

“Then, David Brooks did so well to win the free-kick and Wee Man (Ryan Fraser) stuck it on Cooky’s head – he came up with that big header and it was a big win.”

Daniels signed for Cherries in November 2011 and the club were 15th in League One following his debut in a 0-0 draw with Oldham.

And while he stressed Cherries would not get carried away by their lofty league position, the former Tottenham youngster said they would savour the moment.

“It’s not bad is it?! There is a long way to go but we are going to enjoy it,” he added.

“If you can’t enjoy it now then when can you enjoy it? We will go into the next game full of confidence.

“We have a great squad and it’s about progression. We always aim to progress both on and off the pitch.

“I feel we have done that, especially in the transfer market. We have brought in some great players and now it’s up to us to win more games than we have done in the past.”
