BRANSGORE thrower Scott Mitchell held his nerve to emerge victorious in the German Open.

The 47-year-old saw off an 800-plus field at Wunderland Kalkar, overcoming Dutchman Derk Telnekes 6-5 in a thrilling final.

After eight consecutive breaks of throw, Mitchell levelled the contest at 5-5 to set up a final-leg shootout.

And Scotty Dog then took out a dazzling ton-plus finish to secure his 21st ranking title.

He said: “It was a really strange final. I hadn’t actually held my throw until the 10th leg.

“We both played really well against the throw and kept breaking each other but could not hold our own throw.

"It looked as if Derk had got away from me. He was sat on 54, I had 120 left and shot it with three darts.

“It was a case of using all your nerve, nous, skill and everything you have learned in the past 10 years when it came down to those three darts.

“People who know me know I don’t do it the easy way. I always do it as a nail-biter. I was chuffed to bits to win."

Mitchell had overcome Chris Landman 5-4 in the semis and also beat the likes of Derek Cunningham and Michael Busschner.

The former Lakeside champion banked more than £2,000 for claiming the crown.
