Sailing: Ex-world champion Simon Mussell of Highcliffe Sailing Club lifted the Contender Class trophy in Weymouth, earning him the prestigious title of National Champion 2016.

The Championship, held at Castle Cove SC, was contested over three days and six races gave rise to a mighty battle in windy conditions in which Mussell dominated the fleet, winning every race and leaving the rest of the competitors to play catch up.

Despite an unexpected capsize to windward during race three, offering Ben Holden a sniff of the lead for one leg, Mussell lead the way for each race, revelling in the epic conditions and managing a blistering speed against which the other challengers could not compete.

Fellow Highcliffe member and competitor Gary Langdown posted a highly-respectable seventh place.

Mussell and Langdown’s next campaign in September will be the European Championships, hosted by Highcliffe and contested in the familiar territory of Christchurch Bay.

The Championship has already attracted nearly 70 boats from eight different countries.
