PROUD skipper Scott Mitchell insisted fate had been on his side after tasting double success with England in the Six Nations Cup.

The Bransgore thrower steered England to victory in the men's team competition in Sligo and tasted further glory when he won the individual event.

Mitchell and co bounced back from a shock defeat to hosts Ireland in the group stage to make the final, where they defeated Wales 13-8.

And the 46-year-old saw off the Netherlands' Wesley Harms 5-2 in the men's singles, leading him to believe success had been meant to be.

Reflecting on the double triumph, Mitchell told the Daily Echo: "It seemed it was fate for me!

"When we started off with a loss to the Republic of Ireland, all our plans went out of the window and it was a case of survival.

"The group game against Wales it was a big win as it restored our confidence a bit.

"I had one wobbly game in the final but managed to make up for it by hitting the winning shot.

"It's always good to captain a winning side and the Six Nations is right up there with the World Cup.

"It's nice when you come home with the spoils and there were a few drinks in the trophies on Sunday night!"
