CHERRIES boss Eddie Howe has urged centre-back Baily Cargill to assert himself in League One and "show he is better than the level".

The 20-year-old joined Coventry on loan on deadline day and scored his first domestic professional goal in Saturday's 6-0 thumping of Bury.

Cargill poked home 11 minutes into his home debut before going on to secure a clean sheet alongside fellow loanee and centre-half Jack Stephens.

Former Leicester and Southampton youngster Cargill, who is yet to make a league appearance for Cherries, is due to remain with the Sky Blues until the end of the campaign.

Reflecting generally on Cargill's spell away from Vitality Stadium, Howe challenged the defender to hit top form over a sustained period.

Howe told the Daily Echo: "The first thing I'm looking for is for him to get minutes and to play. Secondly, I want him to play well and show he is better than the level that he is playing at.

"We are in the Premier League so he has to go to Coventry and, hopefully, prove he is better than everybody else and build his experiences.

"It's difficult when you haven't played for a long time consistently. You need to get those experiences somewhere and he will be doing that at League One level.

"He will be making mistakes and learning, growing and winning and all those things that go with a loan spell will be really important for his future development."

Cargill's strike arrived on his 17th senior appearance having made 10 for Cherries in cup competitions.

The defender's most recent Cherries outing came at the end of January when he featured in the FA Cup fourth-round win at Portsmouth.
