Cherries' boss Eddie Howe says the fans will be vital in the siege mentality ahead in the Premier League.

Speaking at the post match press conference after the 2-0 defeat at Southampton, Howe praised both sets of supporters for a great atmosphere at St Mary's.

He said: "I have to compliment our fans. It must have been difficult for them to watch that first half. But they stayed with us. They will be very important to us in the 'them versus us' siege mentality that lies ahead."

He added: "We weren't where we wanted to be in the first half but we responded well in the second half. We didn't have the cutting edge to score though."

Howe said two big defeats to Tottenham and Manchester City were bound to affect confidence but "we are playing very good teams at the highest level.

"I have said before that this is the biggest challenge I have faced and I will work as hard as I can to get things right."

Howe said he was impressed with Southampton.

Cherries play Newcastle at home next week, with both teams in the bottom four. "Every game is a big game in the Premier League. We are getting used to that."
