DEPLETED Bournemouth produced arguably the most impressive result of the weekend when they knocked Hook & Newnham Basics off their perch at the top of Division One.

Lions, who had failed to earn a single point in their opening-day clash with Hook, claimed a five-wicket win at the King George V Playing Field.

The visitors made a terrific start with Ben Thane and Matt Love sent back across the rope by Mike Kitson and new recruit Matt Jones, respectively, with just three runs on the board.

Kieran Thomson and Matt Buckingham staged a mini-revival to take the hosts to 43 before Jones struck on three further occasions.

Josh Buckingham (16) offered some resistance in the lower order but the final three wickets fell for the gain of just 11 runs as Hook reached 106.

Jones claimed figures of four for 31, Andrew Woodward took three for 27 and Josh Finnie two for 17, while wicketkeeper Luke Matthews clung on to five catches.

Bournemouth made it to 31 having lost Andy Hayward and Mike Kitson but skipper Martin Miller (23) and Finnie (26) put on 43 to move the visitors within touching distance.

Jones cracked five fours in his effort of 21 and Ryan Wiltshire and Matthews got Bournemouth across the line.

For Hook, Shane Brewer took two for 18.

A jubilant Miller said: “The boys did brilliantly and it was a great win.

“We asked them to bat and I said to the guys that we needed to use the ball productively and bowl as well as we had done against New Milton the previous weekend.

“Everyone did their jobs. We put the ball where we wanted, they kept nicking it and Luke held five catches.

“Considering we were missing players, everyone contributed and it was a really good all-round performance.

“It proves the point that if you play to the best of your ability then you can beat anybody on your day.

“There have been days where we haven’t played as well but we haven’t been beaten by teams below us, so it was nice to do it the other way round.”
