ENGLAND international Scott Mitchell helped his country to the Six Nations Cup but admitted: “I thought I had blown it.”

BDO world darts champion Mitchell was part of the five-man England team that rallied to an epic 13-12 victory in the final over the Netherlands at the Stormont Hotel, Belfast.

'Scotty Dog' led the charge alongside Glen Durrant and won his first three legs against Michel van der Horst, Danny Noppert and Richard Veenastra.

But the Bransgore-based ace got caught out by old foe Wesley Harms while trying to give his team an 11-8 lead and the Dutch took the next three to move within one leg of victory at 12-10.

However, victories for Paul Hogan, Martin Atkins and new boy Mark McGeeney turned the tide and secured the silverware, much to Mitchell's relief.

“You have to win your games with the darts and 11-8 would have given them a massive mountain to climb,” said Mitchell.

“I don't know whether I froze or just tried too hard because it was Wesley but I blew it to be honest.

“But we are England and we don't fold easily. The way we won at the end proved we have a bit of bottle.”

Meanwhile, Mitchell said the quick-fire nature of the competition had created greater interest and equality across the board.

On the format, he added: “You get three practice darts, play a leg and then suddenly you're off the stage.

“There is no time to think and sometimes you take a loss into your next game.

“I was back up two games after losing to Wesley and my mind was still five minutes behind. It is a crazy format but very interesting and a good leveller.”
