NEWLY-crowned world champion Scott Mitchell is set to shun a lucrative switch to the PDC after tonight’s epic victory over Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams.

‘Scotty Dog’ scooped the BDO’s ultimate prize and with it a cool £100,000 in prize money with a last-ditch 7-6 victory in front of a packed Lakeside crowd.

Number-four seed Mitchell, who had not previously progressed past the last 16 in five previous attempts at Frimley Green, kept his cool despite blowing a number of promising positions against three-time world champion Adams.

Victory at the BDO World Championship has tempted many to take a shot at the renowned Professional Darts Corporation circuit but patriotic Mitchell, 44, insists the lure of defending his crown and representing England is a bigger draw.

Asked about the switch, Mitchell exclusively told the Daily Echo: “At the moment I want to enjoy it and see what the future brings. To be honest, I had no plans to switch before I came here and that probably has not changed now.

“I want to come back and defend this thing, bring back the trophy and either watch somebody else enjoy it or enjoy it myself again.

“Playing for England is really important to me as well. The Six Nations tournament is coming up which I can hopefully get picked for. I am waiting for the squad to be named and it is one of many things I want to do for my country.

“I want to go to a World Cup before the switch happens really. I still have unfinished business in the BDO, there is still a lot to achieve here.”

Meanwhile, magnanimous Mitchell praised opponent Adams after what proved to be a scrappy but intense affair to decide the crown.

“Martin was awesome and to be able to just hang in there with him, give it away and come back again and again was crazy," he added.

“I thought to myself ‘get one more dart and you can win it’ because it was there for the taking and luckily enough I came good.

“I didn’t think I had missed the double 16 (to win the match) by much so I didn’t get too disappointed.

“You just have to hold your nerve, keep your composure and try and get another dart at it and thankfully I did.”
