POOLE-based James Horton (Cannondale) pulled away on the final climb of East Creech Hill to win the Primera Purbeck Road Race.

The 43-mile contest at the Furzebrook circuit was an absorbing affair, with constant attacks keeping the pace high.

Paddy Dunn (CC Weymouth) was the first to go but no one followed and he was soon back in the bunch.

Seventeen-year-old George Smith (Gillingham & Dist Wh), mountain biker Kim Little (Merida), Ryan Weston (Poole Wheelers), Roland Tilley (Ridebike.co.uk), Chris Noble (Westbury Wheelers) and Horton then vainly tried to escape the peloton.

Paul Double (VC Venta) attacked on the fourth of eight laps and developed a lead of seven seconds.

The 18-year-old persisted for two laps before he was hauled back into the bunch at the bell.

Dunn and Double made failed attempts to break clear as the race reached the final climb.

Little took over at the front but Horton had too much power for the off-roader, as did Chris Tomsett (Southampton Uni CC) and Weston.

  • Aran Stanton (VC ST Raphael) clocked 21:52 to win the New Forest CC autumn 10 mile time trial at Ringwood.

Mitch Webber (Pedalheaven) took second (22:05) and Weymouth’s Gregg Parker (VC ST Raphael) was nine seconds further back in third.
