CHERRIES striker Josh McQuoid is keen to make up for lost time as he bids to erase the memory of a season which “passed me by”.

McQuoid was restricted to just one appearance during Cherries’ Championship campaign before he dropped into League One for a loan spell at Peterborough.

And although he scored at Wembley to help Posh lift the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in March, it was a rare highlight during a largely indifferent stay at London Road.

McQuoid, who featured in Cherries’ 1-1 draw with Ipswich in December, netted once during 14 league games for Posh, his tally including just eight starts.

The 24-year-old frontman, capped five times by Northern Ireland, endured a miserable start to the season after sustaining a serious knee during the summer.

McQuoid, who has featured in Cherries’ warm-up games against FC Copenhagen and Eastleigh, is hoping for better fortunes as he looks to play his way back into contention.

He told the Daily Echo: “I just want to get as many minutes as I can, do as well as I can and get as fit as I can. I had a couple of injuries last year which held me back as the season went on. It passed me by which was disappointing from my point of view.

“My priorities this year are to come through fit and injury-free and to do what I can to get in the manager’s eye. We have brought in some good players and there is a lot of quality here so I want to do everything I can to give myself the best chance.

“It is definitely a hard team to get into but everyone has to try to claim their place during pre-season. Everyone will be fighting for a spot so it will be tough. Nobody is guaranteed a place which is a good thing because it shows everyone is challenging.”

McQuoid, who made 39 appearances during Cherries’ League One promotion campaign, was linked with a loan move to Coventry when team-mates Ryan Allsop and Mohamed Coulibaly joined the Sky Blues as part of the Callum Wilson deal.

Asked about the speculation, McQuoid said: “I am just going to do what I can during pre-season and, in terms of playing, we will see what happens. I am not going to say I am going to be playing here because you never know and I can’t predict the future. If it comes to the beginning of the season and the manager wants to keep me and use me then I will be here.”

Certainly a player with talent who seems not to have lived up to the early promise he shewed here and probably would have been better served for the sake of his long tern career to have stayed here, But his attitude is good and we can only hope that he turns out to be the player he once promised to be and I wish him good luck and an injury free future. He is one of several of our "fringe" pl;ayers who for both the sake of their futures and of the Club's need to show they can operate at Championship level this Season, it's crunch time for them, most of us really want them to succeed.

I've been a big fan of Josh but he has never regained that pre-Millwall flair and seems frightened to shoot on sight. He needs to up his work rate, cut the complaining and concentrate on upping his own game. He has the skill to do so much more and I really hope to see it.

Tell me if I am wrong, but when he was with us the first time, he scored most of his goals against weak teams.
Not convinced he is good enough.

I count Josh in with the strikers and not where he was played in our promotion season, there is a glut of players with something to prove in that department this season. That includes Calum Wilson who is as yet unproven at this level.

IMHO only Kermie is a guaranteed starter when we are playing two up front and we have yet to see who the best patrner is for him. My best guess is that Yann may be a permanent fixture and his partner may be changed to mix up the game/games i.e. TK and Calum or Brett or Josh swapping. We are still being linked with other strikers as well, so EH has got some decisions to make. I thnk TK is still a good prospect as a Yann partner IF(?) he can get on target and improve his finishing has he has different assets to the rest of the boys queuing up to play.

Whatever happens, good luck to all the guys fighting for places it must be very tough and frustrating trying to breaking into such a quality team.

I think it very likely that Josh and a few other fringe players, like Brett and Scott, will be heading away from Dean Court before the season gets started or is very old. Although all very competent players, they are not going to get much game time at this level. Best for them and us if they move on so they get regular football and we can sign players proven at Championship level or above.

Morning Ted, would agree on most of that but I am not sure whether he is a natural striker, you know one of those players that drifts in from a wide position !

Unless Eddy sees him as a striker only I am not sure if he will get much of a chance, however he must be given a chance because I feel he is a talent definitely.
I can see him playing a part most certainly because he can play in several positions and Eddy likes that in a player.

Take your chance Josh when you get it son.

I think josh needs to concentrate on the striking role as we have far too many players in the midfield area. I am also as others have said not convinced he is good enough at championship level however I wish him luck if he goes or stays.

Josh had a good dozen or so games for us and got a move, not done a thing since, I hope he improves dramatically to be good enough to get in our first team as to do so he is going to be better than a lot of players that are currently in front of him, I believe he would struggle to get a place on the bench at the moment but good luck to him and I hope he gives it his all

I like McQ, he had/has skill and tenacity so where did it all go wrong? I don't get it! Is he destined to only be a big fish in a small pool? League1/2? That's the great thing about football, no one really knows... I would rather though that we had Josh than not have him, as he might yet blossom.

But all of the above applies re the comments and we just really want to wish him well! it's a great opportunity for him this season and I hope that we don't out him, by loan or otherwise. He should if loaned go to Portsmouth he would be a natural and the crowd there would warm to him. We need them and Soton to play against in the Prem!
