CHERRIES manager Eddie Howe insists his player recruitment policy will be quality not quantity as he continues to try to fine tune his squad for next season.

Midfielder Dan Gosling remains Cherries’ only summer arrival while Howe’s striking resources were diminished by Lewis Grabban’s departure to Norwich.

Howe has been linked with numerous players since the season ended with reports suggesting Coventry have rejected two bids from Cherries for frontman Callum Wilson.

The 22-year-old, who is valued at around £3million by the Sky Blues, is thought to be one of a host of names on Howe’s wish list, although he never comments on specific targets.

Howe made only four permanent signings last summer – Elliott Ward, Ian Harte, Mohamed Coulibaly and Tokelo Rantie – with Andrew Surman also joining on a season-long loan.

“We are actively looking for players and have made bids,” said Howe, who led Cherries to 10th place in the Championship last season. “We have been working hard over the summer to try to secure our top targets.

“I have always said that we wouldn’t be looking to bring in huge numbers but we are looking for quality. Dan Gosling highlights the type of player we are looking for and, hopefully, we can add others to the squad.

“It is difficult with everyone competing for such a small pool of players but we are confident we will have our squad in place, and the one we want to move forward with, before the season starts.

“It is difficult to predict a time frame. I have always been a firm believer that you get the right players and you don’t just get numbers. A lot of Championship clubs have added numbers to their squads and that is the way they work.

“We like to identify players we want and will try to pursue them until such time as we sign them or they go elsewhere.

“Our existing squad is very strong and, to try to improve it, we need to make sure we get very good players to complement what we already have and that is a difficult task.”

Meanwhile, Howe confirmed Darryl Flahavan, Jayden Stockley and Benji Buchel had all agreed new terms which would kick in once their existing contracts have expired at the end of this month.

Quality is very important, but saying that a squad which has very few central defenders, quantity is also important. I appreciate that you can't keep all squad players happy who aren't playing on a regular basis, but you do need numbers. Also, having a good size squad will keep the opposition guessing as to how we will be approaching that game and the tactics which we will use.

If we had the £60m Premiership parachute payments, maybe things would be different.

Eddie has always said that he likes a small squad of 23/24 of first team players, indeed given the constraints that our small ground capacity and consequential revenue places on the Club it's doubtful whether in these days of FFP we could afford more, we have to pay competitive wages. He was saying in an interview on Solent this morning that the Club had rejected approaches from a number of Clubs for various players and were trying hard to retain the present squad, I believe that Wolves are in their final year of "parachute " payments and see how they might make an approach for Cook - but don't understand how Brentford could outbid us for a player.Sadly the game is all about money these days . We can only hope that we can keep the present squad and add another 2/3 good players to it.Good luck Eddie, you will need some, I suspect!

Whilst the club have made several rejected offers to Coventry City FC for Callum Wilson, I think Eddie Howe will not wish to get involved in a "Dutch Auction" with Norwich, Wolves or Brentford (?) for a player that is probably not worth the 3million Coventry, apparently think he's worth. He was only the third highest goalscorer in the 1st Div. last year,Sam Baldock was the leading goalscorer with Bristol City, a team that struggled early season, yet very few clubs are chasing him despite being more of a "natural" goal "poacher" than Wilson, in the Adam Le Fondre mould. Whoever EH brings in to replace Grabban, I'm sure will be quality and complement our style of play. In Eddie we trust. UTC

michael morrison looks a really good free transfer from charlton, he is 26, a defender, has played over 300 games and the charlton fans say he is their best player. middlesbrough and blackpool want him and he could be that extra cover we need for ward, elphic and cook., especially if cookie is on his way
