AFC Bournemouth: Upbeat Eunan O'Kane predicts summer transfer firepower

Bournemouth Echo: UPBEAT: Eunan O'Kane UPBEAT: Eunan O'Kane

MIDFIELDER Eunan O’Kane believes Cherries’ late-season charge has provided boss Eddie Howe with added “ammunition” should he look to strengthen his squad this summer.

Some 14 points off the play-offs at the end of February, Cherries are now in the thick of the race for the top six heading into the final four games of the season.

And even if his team do miss out on promotion to the Premier League, O’Kane, 23, insists Howe’s bargaining power with prospective new faces will be greatly increased.

He told the Daily Echo: “If we make the play-offs we’ll be over the moon but even if we don’t, we will have far-exceeded our expectations at the start of the season.

“That can only be a positive influence on us going forward next year. It becomes a lot easier to attract players if you have just missed out on the play-offs rather than if you have just stayed up by the skin of your teeth.

“Ultimately we want to keep improving as a squad and if the manager feels he needs to strengthen, it gives him a little bit more ammunition to do that.”

In addition to their play-off ambitions, Cherries are hoping to beat the club record for the highest finish in the second flight – 12th under Harry Redknapp in 1988-89.

However, talk of surpassing that mark has taken a back seat since Howe’s men surged into the play-off reckoning.

O’Kane continued: “I think that is credit to the lads, the manager and the staff. We’re never really content with where we are.

“At the start of the season the goal was to stay in the league and we achieved that, and then it became about striving to beat the highest-ever finish.

"We’ve gone on to pick up an awful lot of points and the goal for the season has slightly altered and I think that’s a measure of where we are as a club.

“We always want to be better and let’s hope we can achieve the goal we have set now.”

Like I've said before , if we have a good season , next season we will attract some good players . If that is the case Eddie has got to sale the players that are being carried in the squad ...

We've had a fantastic season wether we reach play offs or not.. I'm looking forward to another crack at the championship next season, not really thinking about premier league just yet! Just want to say well done to Luton Town.. That could've been so easily us wallowing around in the conference or even worse... Credit to Lord Eddie of Howe for what he did back then and for all he's achieved for the club.. Hope we stuff Wednesday, up the cherries!

I agree, there is some dead wood still to clear out before we sign any more quality players.

That is a given I think Nat, there are some players that will be off and a few people may be surprised at just which ones will leave.
In Eddy we trust .

Eddie and Max Demin have a long term plan for the Club and whilst we have done better than anticpated this year and are probably ahead of expectations it will be a more gradual approach. A Club like us has to have a two pronged approach , the development of players through our Youth Programme and the recruitment of young players with ability and the right character to improve them, buying in players who can make an immediate impact is costly and difficult for us given the "Fair Play Rules" and it can only be one or two players at the most. The Ground development to increase capacity and revenue will help of course, but that's not for another year. Of course there will be players leaving as the squad is improved, that's the way it is! Meantime , good luck today, it will be a tough game, particularly if Grabbham isn't playing, cover for him a priority , I suspect.

I think 'Transfer Firepower' captures the priority this summer as we now have two quality Championship stikers, with a real drop in quaity for back up. It took a year to find Yann, hopefully Eddie can unearth another striking gem for next season, else I can't see us sustaining a playoff* push.

*Taken that statistically it is unlikely that we will make it up this season.
