AFC Bournemouth: Cherries captain Tommy Elphick desperate to put down marker in Championship clash against Reading

Bournemouth Echo: RALLYING CRY: Tommy Elphick RALLYING CRY: Tommy Elphick

TOMMY Elphick led Cherries to victory in the first leg of their home double-header before insisting another three-point haul against Reading would make a “huge statement” in the race for the play-offs.

Skipper Elphick bagged his first goal in the Championship to pave the way for Cherries’ crucial 2-1 win over third-placed QPR at Dean Court on Saturday.

His thumping header from an Ian Harte corner on the stroke of half-time was added to by Lewis Grabban’s 20th goal of the season with Armand Traore replying for the visitors.

Victory – Cherries’ seventh in their past nine games – ensured Eddie Howe’s men would remain five points adrift of sixth-placed Reading ahead of their visit to Dorset tomorrow.

Elphick said: “It is a big game and one we feel we can win. We are on an amazing run and want to keep it going because in football there are more downs than ups and we are definitely on an upward curve and want to keep riding it.

"There are still going to be lots of twists and turns but, if we could win, it would be a huge statement.

“We want to put down a marker, not just to ourselves but to everyone else as well. We have a bit of momentum and that can be hard to stop.”

Elphick, who captained Cherries to promotion last season, added: “On big occasions, you need your big players to step up and I want to be a big player for this club. The goal meant a lot to me.

“I just want to keep the fans with us. They have been great all season, even when we weren’t winning, and we owe it to them to keep putting on performances and to keep giving them those hopes and dreams.”

Asked whether Cherries had received any extra motivation from facing former Dean Court boss Harry Redknapp, Elphick replied: “Sometimes it is nice to put one over your old bosses but that was not the case. There was no added incentive, other than trying to make the play-offs.

“We have seen a lot of Harry since I have been here. He was around the place quite a lot at the start of last season and Kevin Bond came in and helped the manager after he had taken over. This club owes a lot to these people. Harry put this club on the map and we should never forget that.”

Bring on Reading, next on the list to be put to the sword by the Cherries! No hat-trick from Yann for a few games....is he due, I wonder?

I would love to see another 3 points but this is the harder one to win I feel. Reading are playing much better away than they are at home so this has the makings of a classic night game at Dean Court. It could be one of those 'I was there' games like M/bro al those years ago. A season defining game not to be missed.

We've had some outstanding Captains over the years at the club, none better than Tommy!! Every game is going to be tough, but I BELIEVE!!! So every game Is one we can win.... Whether we do, or whether we don't, this has been an outstanding season, when you think, this squad has only had a few additions from the side that won promotion, that's astonishing in itself!! Yes and he is the only captain we have ever had that talks to goalposts!!!! Funny how some players like to do things in certain ways our squad photos will have missing for every game because by the time he has had a chat with the goalpost the squad photo has been taken! Thank God for digital technology!!! I believe as you know AFCBpete and I am dedicating our wonderful achievement to my late brother who would have been chuffed to bits. Up the mighty Cherries

It will be another "tight" game, against another counter attacking team, with the pressure growing on our players. Which ever way it goes, it has been a great season for the Club and supporters. Thanks to all those concerned. Good luck tomorrow, lads.

The pressure is more on the other teams, as they are expected to beat tinpot Bournemouth. We''ll happily plod along beating all before us and see where it get's us!! COME ON YOU MIGHTY REDS....

Whatever the result tomorrow, it's been an incredible season for our lads and nothing can dampen that! Any points gained and progress up the league from here on in, is a bonus way over and above what we dreamed of at the start of this season. Consolidate? More like made a big impression!

I don't fear anyone in this league anymore. The way the lads have starting playing is incredible. Im not getting any hopes up but competing in the playoffs would be huge for the club. HUGE ! I'd love to see us in the Final with QPR at Wembley !

I hope we can pull another result out of the bag Tuesday night. Its been nothing short of an incredible season ! I hope the lads can continue this sort of form next season. In the meantime, I think we need to cram a few more seats into the Goldsands !
