AFC Bournemouth: Top medics to assess Ward injury

Bournemouth Echo: KEY PLAYER: Cherries defender Elliott Ward KEY PLAYER: Cherries defender Elliott Ward

CHERRIES star Elliott Ward faces an anxious wait to discover whether his season may have come to a premature end following a freak injury.

Ward damaged his right knee when he collided with an advertising hoarding during Cherries’ 1-0 defeat by Leicester at Dean Court nine days ago.

And although he managed to complete 90 minutes against the Foxes, his knee subsequently swelled up and he was referred to a specialist after having a scan.

Ward saw a consultant in London on Thursday and will this week fly to Italy to undergo further tests at the FIFA-accredited Villa Stuart Sport Clinic in Rome.

News of Ward’s predicament was revealed by the Daily Echo on our website ahead of Cherries’ 2-2 draw against Bolton at the Reebok on Saturday.

Boss Eddie Howe, speaking to the media after goals from Lewis Grabban and Simon Francis had earned Cherries a deserved share of the points, said: “Elliott has had a scan and been to see a specialist. We are comparing the results of the scan with an old one because it didn’t show clearly what the problem was, although it looks like there might be a slight issue.

“He is going to Italy for another opinion. We are hopeful he will not need to go under the knife but we need to get him checked out by the best specialists in the world because he is a very important player for us and we don’t want to dive in if we don’t need to.

“If there is no surgery then I wouldn’t think it would be a lengthy lay-off. If he were to need surgery, it might be the rest of the season.”

Asked whether he would enter the loan market should Ward be ruled out long term, Howe said: “It would leave us light defensively because we also have Charlie Daniels injured at the moment.

“We will wait and see. The two centre-halves did a lot better in the second half against Bolton so I don’t think we are in any rush to change the starting line-up. If we were to get injuries, both Ian Harte and Simon Francis could play there so we do have a couple of options.”

Ward, who has turned in a series of solid displays since joining Cherries in the summer, was sidelined for six weeks earlier this season after pulling his calf muscle at Burnley in November.

I haven’t posted for a while and with work commitments haven’t been to recent games, but I can’t help but be carried along with the sheer positive vibes coming out of the club at the moment. Daniels and Ward being afforded the “best care in the world”. A long time from the days of having to stock a team full of loan players because we neither had the medical or player resources to field a team of our own staff. The results continue to show excellent progress but I do sympathise with those who prefer a 4-4-2. I sense that Rantie and Kermogant would be a right handful if given a 90 minute spell and would relish seeing it. Sadly,I have to wait until the visit to Pride Park where it’s likely to be 4-1-4-1. However, I like many are just buzzing to be a fan of a fantastic team. Up the Cherries!!!!

It's a shame that Elliott Ward has picked up this knee injury as he was having a very good season so far and had firmed up the defence. I hope that his trip to Italy will decide that he doesn't need surgery and that he can be back sooner than later. In the meantime Cookie is more than an adequate replacement and before his own injury enforced absence was perhaps our most consistant defender.
Simon Francis at 6ft 2" could fill in at centreback or perhaps Hughes who has played there before. Ian Harte will be needed at left back until Daniels is back and IMO would be a risk in the middle of the defence.

What has happened to Zhubar our forgotten centre back ?? After coming back from a loan spell injured earlier in the season, has he recovered and gone out on loan again or has he been sold, if so I missed it ???. If still at the club and fit could fill in as emergency cover at CB or RB if we are pushed for players defensively.
Great result Saturday and a point is a point nearer Championship survival but shame we couln't get all 3 our football deserved. Tough game coming up this Saturday and I think we are capable of causing a big shock to Burnley's title ambitions with a win but need to shut out Ings & Vokes and limit their supply. Think EH will start same as at Bolton with Kermogant and Rantie coming on at some point as impact players to put their defence under pressure late on. UTC.

Disappointed to be away abroad this weekend and missing the game, should be a "cracker" Ingsey is on fire at the moment so will be a good test of the defence . But if we play as we did against Leicester and the second half of the Bolton game then we will have a good chance!
We should stay up and even have a good push up the table this season.
Think TK is close to making a mark for himself. And liking the look of Kermit with plenty to come from Lewis!
Will be getting a season ticket next season UTCs

Can't some people just realise what they see when they watch a game , if not just look at the stats ,,

Perhaps you would care to educate us all with your obviously incisive observation's of the same game I listened to, and you obviously gleaned an entirely different outlook

You should watch a game instead of looking at the stats, you will see what great football we play and even in defeat we give a great account of ourselves as a massively entertaining and progressing football club. You will also see that TK is a terrific, tricky little player who gives defences huge problems with his pace.
