MARK Sturney helped lead Wimborne to a third-placed finish and then immediately set his sights on a promotion push next season.

The All Blacks finished their Southern Counties South campaign in fine style on Saturday as they secured a convincing 34-10 away win over Walcot.

Gavin Maltman (2), Jim Brokenshire (2), Steve King and Tom Moysey (pictured) all scored tries, with Moysey adding two conversions.

That result saw Wimborne claim third spot in the division, an agonising one point adrift of Trowbridge and eight behind champions Devizes.

But team manager Sturney is confident the Minstermen can go one better next term.

He said: “This was a long season and we put in some great performances. We finished third in the league and made it to the last eight in the country at intermediate cup level, losing narrowly to St Austell.

“I want to thank all the players that have pulled on the all black shirt this season. There is a great buzz around the club at the moment.

“We are looking forward to building on this success with a strong contingent of colts stepping up to senior rugby next season and our ability to attract new players to the club.

“Promotion from Southern Counties South is a realistic target for the club next season.”
