ENGLAND women’s cricket captain Charlotte Edwards was the star guest at a Dorset Schools Games finals day.

Edwards, who had just returned from the World Cup in India, presented trophies to teams competing in the Lady Taverners under-13s competition at Canford School.

Winners on the day were Parkstone Grammar School with Bournemouth School for Girls finishing runners-up.

Other schools who took part in the under-13 Dorset finals day were third-placed Woodroffe, Lockyers Middle School, St Osmunds Middle School, Gillingham, Sandford Middle and Avonbourne School.

Before attending the finals, Edwards opened the new non-turf pitch at Christchurch Junior School which was funded by ‘Chance To Shine’.

Edwards is an ambassador for the ‘Chance To Shine’ programme which was launched by the Cricket Foundation in 2005.

Before the initiative, less than 10 per cent of state schools played any meaningful cricket.

Seven years on, 1.86 million children have been educated through playing cricket in 6,500 schools.

Edwards has visited hundreds of schools nationwide, delivering assemblies and coaching sessions to inspire many children to take up the game she loves.
