JAY Lelliott penned another chapter in his re-writing of the Dorset record books as the 2013 Dorset County Championships opened at Littledown.

The Swim Bournemouth 18-year-old toppled four Dorset senior records and eight competition best times (CBTs) as he dominated the men’s events.

His record-breaking wins across the first two days of the championships came in the 17 and over 50 and 100m backstroke in 26.80 and 56.22, the 100m butterfly in 55.93 and the 400m freestyle in 3:53.68.

All four times broke senior and age group CBTs and the Dorset senior records.

He just missed more records in the 100m freestyle and 200m medley by a few 100ths of a second.

Lelliott, who joined Swim Bournemouth from Tornadoes of South Dorset last summer and travels from Portland to Canford School five times a week to train, said: “I’m over the moon with my progress since I came here.

“I think I could have gone a bit faster if the warm-up pool had been available.”

Team-mate Alan Wong broke age group CBTs with times of 59.91 and 2:11.97 in the 15yrs 100m backstroke and 200m medley. The backstroke time was also a junior CBT.

Lucy Brain slashed 10 seconds off her previous best to become senior, junior and 13yrs champion in the 400m freestyle in 4:30.38 – an age group CBT.

These records were among 111 regional qualifying times recorded by Swim Bournemouth swimmers, who also won 172 age group medals – 61 gold, 57 silver and 54 bronze.

Seagulls’ BCS academy swimmers Beth and Zak Aitchison were in sparkling form as they added their names to the record books.

Beth’s myriad of titles included age group CBTs in the 15yrs 200m medley in 2:23.09 and 200m breaststroke in 2:32.33.

The breaststroke time was a three-second PB and ranks her first in the country in her age group just a week before trials for the European Junior Championships.

Brother Zak’s winning 2:29.38 in the boys’ 200m breaststroke was a seven-second PB, an age group CBT and a national qualifying time, and it won him the senior as well as the junior and age titles Paralympian-in-waiting Alice Tai (Seagulls/BCS) came within a tenth of a second of the British record for her disability category as she won the 100m backstroke.

Seagulls’ Nathan Gerrard had a record-breaking debut in the county championships, setting new age group figures in the 9yrs 200m breaststroke and 200m medley (3:32.99 and 3:06.71).

Maddy Kemp gave Poole a share of the record-breaking with an age group CBT of 1:05.43 in the 14yrs 100m butterfly.

Poole coach Robin Armayan said: “This was a brilliant swim showing great pacing and strategy. She didn’t panic when she wasn’t in the lead but stepped up on the last length to win on the touch.”

Seagulls won three of the six relays including the men’s 4x100m freestyle in which Harry Thorpe was a winner for the fourth year running with four different clubs.

Thorpe (53.49), who teamed up with Darren Price (53.99), Cianan Mann (54.46) and Chris Gannaway (56.23), swam for Bournemouth Dolphins in 2010, Swim Bournemouth in 2011 and Poole in 2012.

Price, Thorpe and Mann also achieved a medal clean sweep in the men’s 50m freestyle while Seagulls’ Maisie Gormley, Bethan O’Hara and Emma Garland respectively won gold, silver and bronze in the junior 50m backstroke.

Seagulls also won the girls’ 12/u and 14/u medley relays.

Swim Bournemouth won the women’s 4x100m medley and the 14/u boys’ 4x100m freestyle while Poole won the 12/u boys’ freestyle for the third year running through Jacob Peters, Lewis Harding, Raf McCreath and Ollie Weston.

Swim Bournemouth’s Abbie Quarrie was the most prolific gold medallist with seven age group titles.

Six age group golds apiece went to Lelliott and Seagulls/BCS youngster Jack Arnell.

Winners of five age group titles were Beth Aitchison, Swim Bournemouth’s Hannah Stonier and Alex Bryant, and Poole’s Katie Mills.
