Mitchell insists Cherries striker Demouge is not 'a dud'

DUTCH LOAN MOVE: Frank Demouge DUTCH LOAN MOVE: Frank Demouge

CHAIRMAN Eddie Mitchell has expressed his disappointment at Frank Demouge’s failure to cut it in England – but insists the striker was not a “dud” signing.

Dutchman Demouge yesterday put the finishing touches to a move to Holland when he signed a loan deal with top-flight outfit Roda JC until the end of the season.

The 30-year-old was given permission by Eddie Howe to return to his homeland, even though the Cherries boss would have preferred him to pursue his career in England.

Demouge last season netted seven times in 20 appearances for FC Utrecht before becoming Cherries’ marquee summer signing when he penned a two-year deal.

However, after admitting he had found the rigours of the English game demanding and picking up an injury in his first training session, Demouge was sidelined for the first two months of the campaign.

And despite forcing his way in and starting Paul Groves’s final two games in charge, Demouge failed to feature under Howe and slipped further down the pecking order following Brett Pitman’s arrival.

Mitchell told the Daily Echo: “It is frustrating all round. We know that what suits one manager, might not suit another and his injury didn’t help when he first came here.

“He has gone back to a top-flight club in Holland so it is not as if he was a dud. He just didn’t make the breaks he would have wanted, for reasons only he and the managers know.

“If we find there are players needing to play and wanting to move because they are in a foreign country, we will let them go, providing the manager is agreeable.”

Demouge is understood to be one of the highest-paid players at Dean Court, with Roda expected to pay the majority of his wages while he remains with them.

Mitchell added: “He came on a free transfer so it didn’t cost much to get him. We have paid his wages while he has been here, which is a cost. If he had played and scored 10 goals, we would say we were pleased with the outlay. He didn’t but you could say that about lots of players.

“Signing players is often a gamble, more so when you find somebody from abroad.

“He hasn’t gone permanently and, maybe next season, it might be different. He might go there and score loads of goals and, when he comes back, Eddie might have a different view, I don’t know.

“We are not here to waste money for the club, we are here to cut our cloth as tightly as we can and still try to be successful. Frank fitted in well and always conducted himself properly. But you can only get 11 men on the pitch and we have got people in that position who Eddie chooses to pick. That is the way football is.”

The problem was his early injury and as a result was unable to establish himself in the squad good luck for your future as I feel he will not be returning to the club

This was just one of many mistakes made by the club's hierarchy during a "disappointing" 18 month spell. That is all in the past now, and we've moved onto better times. Thank you for the favour from Yeovil last night, and let's hope that a wet and windy Huish Park has left the franchise weary for Saturday!

Agree it's always a gamble signing a player and the gamble is both ways. I met Frank briefly pre-season, he was a nice guy and must be disappointed that it hasn't worked out. So thanks for trying and all the best in Holland.

Thank's for your opinion Eddie lad, lets be honest, what you know about football could be written on the back of a stamp with a felt-tipped pen

I think EM got it right when he said "what suits one manager might not suit another". Add to that his early injury and recovery time plus our strength in depth in his position it must of been very difficult for Frank to push for a place in the starting 11. On another subject - well done Yeovil for that big favour last night. Now let's really take it to "Franchise FC" on Saturday - UTC!

Cracking results for us last night, with Yeovil beating MK Dons 2 -1 and Swindon drawing:)

A win on Saturday and we could easily to up to 3rd and right on the coat tails of the top two :)

All very quiet on us bringing anyone more in following the signings of Alsopp, Seabourne and Fraser. Therefore, do we think that Sir Eddie Howe is happy with what he has got?

COME ON YOU REDS!!!!!!!!!

All teams are going to drop points as you did at Walsall. We should have beaten Orient last night and missed four good chances. So we are third and with a game in hand so a long way to go still.

You have a tough game saturday as MK will want to make up for losing last night but i think its great MK and Brentford are still in the FA Cup as it gives them more games and Brentford yet to have a bad patch as all teams do.
I still dont think Tranmere will last the pace and Sheff Utd will have the Danny Wilson second season syndrone as he had with us and Bristol City and Hartlepool.
I think Coventry could be the team to watch although they are a bit hit and miss at the moment they are sneaking up.
As for Brian Flynn saying Doncaster were the best side in the league we played them off the park when we played them as we did with MK.
Still a long way to go and it is going to go to the wire with a few freak results to come yet and all teams dropping points to perhaps teams you dont think you should.

At least it demonstrates how things have changed - with the Manager picking the team and dealing with all player matters. Frank Demouge was unlucky to be injured before he could adjust to the more physical and quick "English" game, I wish him well back in the Netherlands, but would be surprised to see him back. But what about Davids, playing in the "Development" team last night, too highly paid for that, he seems as far away from a first team place as ever., a situation that he must be unhappy with, perhaps he should go out on loan to get up to speed..

Arguably your best ever post on here. Agree with all your observations, as we enter a very crucial period of the season there will be some unexpected results. The teams near the bottom are scrapping for L1 survival and it's very tight at the top, probably 12 teams with realistic promotion hopes.
With heavy pitches at this time of year it wont necessarily be the best footballing teams that come out on top.
The clubs with the better quality in depth squads will have a real advantage.

I 100% agree that MK Dons and Brentford still in the FA Cup is great news for two reasons. One is that is paints a very good picture for League One but secondly and more importantly, it is going to be a bit of a distraction for both.

Indeed, the Brentford players are bound to be distracted by there big game against Chelsea on television and MK Dons will fancy there chances of getting into the last 8 with their tie against Barnsley as Home.

In my opinion further evidence of how the Cup can affect players performance in the league, is that Bradford City's league form has been diabolical recently and I would imagine that the Carling Cup commitment has played it's part in this

Wise words, at last, from Edmund.
Now perhaps he can practise what he currently preaches, i.e. Stay off the pitch and out of the changing room!

Wilkie can I also add that it is refreshing to see that the comments on the whole are about the article and also that someone (LeGod) from another club come on here and posts positively and makes a lot of sense. Long may it last.

I also agree about your comment about EM making sense. This is by far the most positive outlook this club has ever had (someone will come on and tell us different I guess!!)

Did the scummers play Orient last night? I think you need to re-read the post pal.
The post from LeGod wasn't a wind up and he/she had very valid points.

Lets be honest here, if EM had not persuaded Maxim to invest in the club we'd probably be dead and buried by now. So yes, will always be grateful to EM for that, but I dread to think where we'd be otherwise... But that's all in the past, too much to look forwards to now thanks to Maxim... UTCIAD
