PIRATES new boy Rohan Tungate made an exceptional start to the Australian Championships by giving the big guns a tough time in Gillman.
The rookie speedway ace finished in an impressive third position, claiming 17 points and outscoring seasoned campaigners including Cameron Woodward, Davey Watt and Ty Proctor.
Having registered nine points during the heats, Tungate made the top four for the A final where he managed to battle for the lead before losing out to vastly-experienced duo Troy Batchelor and Jason Doyle.
The next round is scheduled for Wednesday at Undera, Victoria.
