FA Cup: Howe lauds 'top quality' Cherries performance

First published in Sport Bournemouth Echo: Photograph of the Author by

MANAGER Eddie Howe hailed Cherries’ bravery after watching his men come within 20 minutes of causing an FA Cup upset at Wigan yesterday.

Cherries and the Premier League outfit will both be in the pot for the fourth round draw at 3.30pm this afternoon after the DW Stadium clash finished 1-1.

Eunan O’Kane fired Cherries into a deserved lead in the 41st minute, only for Wigan to hit back on 70 minutes when Jordi Gomez converted a rebound after Shwan Jalal had saved his initial penalty.

Howe said: “I can’t praise the players enough for the performance. We were very brave with the ball and the players passed the ball. We asked them to do it and full credit to them and the goalkeeper for that.

“We had to have a game-plan without the ball because we knew Wigan were a good side in possession and we couldn’t be too open. We soaked up their pressure in terms of their passing but they didn’t create too many chances, which was pleasing.

“When you show the bravery that we did in the style of our play, and how we defended, it was top quality.”

The match was not without controversy as Cherries playmaker Marc Pugh was booked after hitting the deck in the 18-yard box in the first half, with referee Robert Madley ignoring vociferous claims for a penalty.

The Latics were then awarded a spot kick of their own after Simon Francis had been judged to have pulled the shirt of Maynor Figueroa.

Howe said: “He (Pugh) is not the type of player that goes to ground easily so my first impression was it was a penalty. Without seeing it again, I wouldn’t be able to confirm that.

“On their one, again I haven’t seen it again, but I am told that there was, potentially, a little tug in there, so I can see why the referee gave it. I think it was probably a 50-50 call.”

The teams are due to meet for a third round replay at Dean Court in the week commencing January 14.

Howe added: “We will take them back, enjoy the day and, hopefully, our supporters will enjoy seeing a Premier League club coming down.”

Cherries midfielder Richard Hughes required eight stitches after a clash of heads late in yesterday’s third round tie. Howe described the former Pompey man as “absolutely outstanding with and without the ball”.

Meanwhile, Howe confirmed Cherries had received no bid from Blackpool for striker Wes Thomas.

He reported that the Championship outfit had submitted a loan request which did not interest or benefit Cherries.

That came after Blackpool manager Michael Appleton, who has loaned Thomas at both Portsmouth and Blackpool this season, told the BBC he expected further discussions to take place.

Appleton said: “As it is at the minute, he returns to Bournemouth. We’re a little bit frustrated and he’s a little bit frustrated because I am not sure if he will have much involvement at Bournemouth.

“But we are still in the early part of January and I wouldn’t say the door was completely closed on that one at all. A lot of things can happen and I am sure there will be discussions over the next week or so.”

Another Cherries player attracting interest is midfielder Lorenzo Davids, who has been heavily linked with a move to Dutch club Willem II.

Willem’s technical director Marc van Hintum reportedly told Voetbal International: “For us, he would be a perfect reinforcement. We will try to create a new opening for negotiations.”

The commentaturs had no doubt that we deserved a penalty and the one awarded against us , as harsh, though there might have been a little bias from "Willo", Steve Claridge and Matty Holland and great praise too for the quality of our play. But a replay it is and we must have every chance of going through at Home. I hope though that the replay is after the six pointer against Swindon , we don't need a tough game just a couple of days before such a vital match. It's 25 years since we gained promotion to the old Second Division - a suitable time for Eddie and Jason to repeat Harry's feat. As for our Dutch players, I understand that they are , by far, the best paid players at the Club and if for whatever reason, fitness etc, they are to remain fringe players, then surely it is in both the interest of player and the Club, that they move on. Eddie will always pick the player that he feels can do the job he wants for the team regardless of reputation. We all trust his judgement.

Iwas less than 30 yards from both penalty incidents and felt we were robbed on both occasions. Excellent result though and if we play with confidence can go through next week. The only time we conceded the initiative yesterday was when we tried to "shut up shop"

I am sure that EM has no doubt learnt from his experience of running AFCB over the past few years and in particular (I hope) he has learnt how to handle the media!

This would have been a great opportunity for the TV cameras turning up at Dean Court for the Wigan replay and it would have brought in much needed funds.

Alas his handling of Five Live and Sky will mean that they will not be too keen to even publicise our great achievements. I am currently listening to Radio Five, thus far there has been no mention about our great performance at Wigan yesterday.

I do hope that EM is sensible enough to learn from past mistakes because they can turn out to be very costly.

What a complete load of old tosh! Sky Sports News had a reporter at Wigan who gave regular updates and was extremely complimentary about us. 5 Live also had nice things to say about us too. Let's get some perspective on this; we did an extremely good job yesterday but, in national media or shock value terms, this was a match between two sides who could easily be playing each other in the League next year!
Also, ask yourself how vocal EM has been in the media since EH came back compared to how he was before the second coming. The answer is simple; he now sits in the background and mostly only talks about the things chairmen should talk about.
EM won't be on the radar when the decisions about live replay broadcasts are made.

I trust you read my post before you replied with your comment.

I did say that EM has learnt his lesson on how to handle the media. But one SKY reporter (incidently they can be found at every game) and a passing comment on radio five does not mean that they have forgotten how EM has behaved/treated them in the past.

My point was that the Media feel that football clubs need them more than than they need the clubs and they have long memories. I am not in any way denying that EM has not changed nor that he is not passionate as we are.

Being complimentary about the club's achievement is one thing and knocking at EM's office door asking him to cover the game on TV is something else.

Anyone know how many we had there?? I heard 2,000 but am sure it was more that stand was quite full?

Roll-on next Saturday, there'll be some humble-pie waiting for DiCanios lot at the Quicksands!!!!

Now that Barnard has gone back to the Saints, it is my understanding that they are the top earners, which given their pedigree and the hype at the time is understandable. But, only if they are playing on a regular basis and not just fringe players..

I just wondered because as I have said on here before we all hear that this player earns this amount and that player earns X amount when without reading the players contracts ourselves it is only hearsay. One of our current players is a mate of my brother and he finds it hilarious some of the figures that get mentioned

5-0, 5-0 and 4-0...Swindon's last 3 results. The Cherries are still comfortably the worst side we've faced all season (how many did we put past you?)...looking forward to our trip to Boscombe to see how much you've improved and to burst your bubble. By the way we didn't need a replay to see off Wigan last season!
aah.. but we didn't have a manager then......

Don't get your hopes up, your going down at the Quicksands!!!!
Thats home form, tell us about your away form to class sides
We're undefeated away from home against teams in the top half of the table and when we've come unstuck it tends to be against the smaller clubs...I suppose that gives you a chance
