Swim Bournemouth new boy Jay Lelliott struck gold three times and silver twice during a weekend that also qualified him for five events at next year’s national youth championships.

Lelliott, 17, who holds eight Dorset senior records, was first to the timing pad in the men’s 200m butterfly, 200m backstroke and 1500m freestyle at the Cardiff Open Meet in long course times of 2:08.23, 2:09.81 and 16:20.05 respectively.

He was also second in the 100m backstroke and butterfly in 1:00.45 and 58.23 and fourth in the 400m freestyle (4:10.33).

All but the 400m freestyle were national qualifying times.

Lelliott, who joined Swim Bournemouth from Tornadoes of South Dorset in the summer, is travelling from his home on Portland to train at Canford School five or six days a week.

“I’m loving it. I came here because I wanted something a lot more challenging,” he said.

“It’s difficult with the travelling – 35 miles and an hour-and-a-bit each way. But I felt there was no-one to push me at Tornadoes. I wanted to challenge myself a bit more.”

Lelliott, who has Olympic aspirations, is hoping to join the Bath University squad after he leaves school next year.

Lelliott’s winnings were among literally dozens of medals won by a 25-strong Swim Bournemouth squad in Cardiff.

Head coach Emma Richards said: “Many swimmers also recorded regional qualifying times, which we didn’t really expect at the first long course meet of the season.”
