SEVERAL readers contacted the Echo after seeing the picture of Bournemouth Electric Football Club when they won the Page Croft cup for the 1948-49 season, printed on March 23.

Hugh Clark of Bournemouth identified Ron Old as the player in the centre of the front row behind the cup. Hugh didn’t know Ron as a footballer, but met him later when Hugh played cricket. He was aware of Ron’s long involvement with Bournemouth Electric football and cricket teams.

Ron was known as ‘Mr Electric’ as he did everything at the club, from playing, keeping score and even making the tea. Sadly Ron died a few years ago.

Hugh said Bournemouth Electric FC still play at the same ground at Broadway, off Castle Lane, Bournemouth and are often in the Saturday and Sunday cup finals.

Patricia Cox, also from Bournemouth, has fond childhood memories of her father, Eddie Willmott, playing for Bournemouth Electric during the 1950s.

Eddie and Ron Old looked very similar. She thinks the third player from the left in the back row is Les Scott. Patricia’s grandson also played for Bournemouth Electric for a while.

Margaret Perrins (nee Smart) recognised her late grandfather Fred Smart as the man not wearing a football kit, standing at the back on the left. He worked for the Southern Electricity Board and was probably in his fifties when the picture was taken. She knows he scored for the cricket team and also had some connection with the football team.
