Mrs Jean Willis ( nee Coles ) has many happy memories of growing up in Poole. She brought in a photograph of herself and her sister Shirley wearing identical coats and shoes, holding candy floss at a fair held on Ladies Walking field in 1955. Behind them in the picture is their uncle Ben Bullock with a couple of coconuts he has won on one of the stalls.
Ben Bullock was a familiar face at the Poole level crossing near WH Smiths in the 1980s when he sold the Echo newspaper from a small stand.
The annual fair on Ladies Walking field was a popular event, especially for children. People came from all over Poole and Bournemouth to attend.
Ladies Walk field was originally granted as a green public space to the people of Poole by Lady Wimborne. But as the population of the town grew and development and expansion was needed the public space was lost to the building of shops for the new Arndale Centre, a bus station and car parking in the early 1960s.
