AS Christmas time approaches we find ourselves squirrelling away those Christmas presents ready for the big day. For those of you with puppies or dogs, here are a few tips for you.

Be aware that many Christmas things can be dangerous to our pets. Dogs are so nosy; they can smell everything. Do make sure that gift items are stored well out of reach of your dog, even if they are already wrapped. Our last dog knew what was in the presents under the tree, and it was not unheard of for her to open her own well before Christmas morning.

However, some gifts might be poisonous for your dog. Remember, they can smell what is in the parcel, and if there are food items or soft toys many dogs do open these and consume or play with the contents.

Dangerous items for your dog include: chocolate, pot-pourri, poinsettia, anything with raisins/sultanas/grapes in, anything containing Xylitol (a sugar substitute), Macadamia nuts, and batteries. These are to name but a few. It is far safer to place items well out of reach of your dog.

If he manages to find and consume items, check with your vet to find out if your dog needs treatment. Don’t forget your cats, as many of the same items are also toxic for them with the addition of lilies, which are highly toxic to cats.

Christmas is a time of fun and joy, the last thing we all want is a medical emergency for our pets. A few sensible precautions can eliminate risk and allow us all to enjoy Christmas in peace.
