AROUND 9,000 people from all over the world will be taking part in the Bournemouth Marathon Festival this weekend.

The world’s oldest marathoner, 102-year-old Fauja Singh, will launch the festival at 2pm on Saturday with the first of two junior events near the festival hub at Pier Approach.

Other events that day include the Supersonic 10K at 4pm and The Speed of Light 5k race at 7pm.

On Sunday, the half marathon starts at 8am at Kings Park Drive followed by the Bournemouth Marathon at the same place at 10am.

Fauja, who has run nine marathons, trains every week and thrives on a diet of ginger curry and cups of tea, said: “If someone says I must stop running I ignore them — invariably they’re younger than me.

“The secret to a long and healthy life is to be stress-free. If there’s something you can’t change then why worry about it. Be grateful for everything you have, stay away from people who are negative, stay smiling and keep running.”

Around 1,273 people have entered the Supersonic 10k and there will be around 285 participants in the junior races. A total of 4,024 people have signed up for the Bournemouth marathon.

The BMF is run by GSi Events, the same team behind the Edinburgh Marathon Festival which is in its 12th year.
