THOUSANDS of cyclists pedalled through the New Forest at the weekend for one of the south coast’s most popular annual rides.

Around 3,500 people entered the Wiggle New Forest Spring Sportive, taking on 67 and 84-mile routes through the picturesque national park.

Riders set off from Somerley, which comprises an historic stately home and gardens not usually open to the public, at 7.45am on both Saturday and Sunday.

Laura Bailey, of UK Cycling Events, said it has become one of the most popular rides on the cycling calendar.

“It’s a really accessible event,” said Ms Bailey. “Relocating to Somerley has been fantastic – it’s a beautiful part of the New Forest so riders and their families have had a chance to go around the house throughout the weekend.

“A lot have come from all over the country and decided to stay in the area throughout the weekend to make a proper break of it.

“We’re delighted with the positive feedback we’ve received.”

She said the ride always attracts cyclists of all ages and standards, with many making it their first attempt at distance cycling.

“There are a few challenging climbs in there - but nothing too scary,” said Ms Bailey.

“We have again had a great breadth of riders and representation of different people taking part.”

Starting in the New Forest’s south-west corner, riders then headed east before completing an anti-clockwise loop of woodland.

Cyclists were able to enjoy passing through villages including Sway, Beaulieu and Lepe.

The course’s steepest climb came just outside of Nomansland, but after this the route was predominantly downhill.

All those taking part receive a medal, t-shirt and a Powerbar at the finish line.
