Have you spotted the Community Wardens from Bournemouth University working around Winton?

SUBU’s Community Wardens scheme is now in its second year running, aiming to bridge the gap between residents and the increasing student population in the community. Working in conjunction with AUB, Bournemouth Borough Council, Dorset Police and the Winton Community Forum, the Wardens are regularly visiting roads in Winton, talking to both residents and students.

The wardens offer advice to local residents on dealing with noise complaints or anti-social behaviour, ensuring they understand the correct procedures to reporting such incidents. Students also benefit from the scheme as the Wardens provide guidance from noise issues to what day to put the bins out, supporting students moving into private accommodation for the first time. They help students understand how their behaviour may affect those living around them and how they can minimise behaviour causing concern.

After just the first year of SUBU’s Community Wardens scheme, reported crime in Winton decreased by 19.5% as well as complaints on bins obstructing pathways reducing by 41%.

The Wardens are available to discuss any concerns with all Winton residents, however residents wishing to report any complaints can do so through either Bournemouth Borough Council or Bournemouth University. As they do not have any enforcement powers, the Wardens will assist in pointing residents in the right direction.

You can see the Community Wardens in blue SUBU hoodies on the roads in Winton during the week between 9am-5pm, or contact them directly though email: communitywardens@bournemouth.ac.uk. (Please note that this email address should not be used to formally report incidents of noise or anti-social behaviour; such reports should be made via this Bournemouth Borough Council form.)
