CREATIONS and designs by Bournemouth University (BU) students will be on display at the Festival of Design and Technology, which starts today.

The festival, which is open to the public and industry, is a showcase of work created by around 200 final year design and creative technology students.

Ideas on display will include a bicycle ambulance for remote areas, a self-inflating life vest, and a futuristic beach pod.

Visitors will also see a variety of education aids and other designs including street furniture, recycling equipment and a social dining experience.

BSc (Hons) Product Design student Michael Lang will be exhibiting his prototype fuel heater for energy generators in freezing conditions.

He said: “I’ve already secured myself a graduate job, but there are so many opportunities here – especially if you are planning on taking something to market, it’s great.”

The Festival takes place on BU’s Talbot Campus and is open to the public from 10am to 4pm today, tomorrow and Monday.

This morning was due to kick off with a Business Breakfast, giving an opportunity to attend a networking breakfast and presentation before touring the exhibition. On Monday there will be a Schools Day with a guest lecture delivered by a Dyson representative.

“The Festival of Design and Technology is an annual exhibition of final year projects by Design, Engineering and Creative Technology students,” said a university spokesman.

“Visit the show to learn more about the students, view their work and discover new talent. The inspirational designs and prototypes on display take into consideration issues such as market need, function, engineering, sustainability, style and aesthetics.”

The event is free of charge but anyone wishing to attend should register online.
