Swanage is gearing up for its annual folk festival which is expected to attract thousands of revellers to the seaside town.

A number of top folk acts have been booked this year, including award winning Martin Simpson, who has been nominated 23 times in eleven years of BBC Radio 2’s Folk Awards.

The festival kicks off at a host of venues from Friday until Sunday, with Martin playing the headline set at the Mowlem Theatre on Saturday night.

Playing on the same bill will be Wendy Arrowsmith, PJ Wright and Brooks Williams and the Tom McConville Band.

Activities take place all day at Sandpit Field, where the main marquee will be based, and around 50 troupes – performing a wide range of traditional dances – will perform at venues throughout the weekend.

One of the highlights will be Saturday’s grand dance procession, taking place at 3.30pm from Prince Albert Gardens to the sea front, where a mass dance will entertain the crowds.

A festival spokesman said: “We’ve been working hard over the long, dark winter nights to create another excellent package of concerts and entertainment.

“We can’t guarantee good weather nor an end to the recession, but we will try to make you smile.

“Swanage is the perfect place to enjoy the rest of the summer.”

Local pubs will host a number of informal sessions, with music for all to join in with.

On Sunday, at 10.30am, St Mary’s Church hosts the popular folk service. Call Swan-age Tourism on 01929 422 885.
