WAREHAM’S recycling centre has been closed after reports of an unexploded shell found in a skip.
Bomb disposal teams were called to the centre, on the Westminster Road Trading Estate.
A Dorset Police spokesman said: “We were called 3.55pm to a report of a discarded shell in one of the metal skips in the recycling centre at Wareham. The informant said it looked like the shell was unexploded, as it still had a tip on it.”
It was around 15ins long and 7ins in diameter, he said.
“The site has been evacuated and a cordon has been set up and explosive experts have been called,” the spokesman added.
Dorset Waste Partnership said it had been informed by W&S, the contractor that runs the trip.
A Dorset Police spokesman has this evening confirmed the item has been removed from the site by bomb disposal experts.
