DISTRICT chiefs have announced free parking for shoppers across Purbeck during the Christmas run-up.

The move, calculated to help boost trade in Swanage, Wareham and Corfe Castle, has been agreed with local chambers of commerce.

Purbeck District Council economy spokesman Cllr Peter Webb said: “With a great range of goods for sale in Purbeck, having free parking gives residents that extra incentive to shop locally this year.”

Free parking will be available at council-run car parks in Wareham on December 18, 19, 20 and 21. These include the Rempstone Centre, Church Street, Bonnets lane East and West, Stretche Road and Connegar Lane.

Meanwhile, in Swanage there will be free parking for late-night shopping every Wednesday, December 4-January 1, between 4-10pm, at all town council car parks. There will also be free parking every Saturday in Broad Street and Main Beach car parks from December 7 until January 4.

Free parking is available in West Street, Corfe Castle, on December 18, 19, 20 & 21.

Bemrose Mobile, the company behind Purbeck’s ‘phone and pay’ parking, has waived its transaction and SMS service charges throughout December in all local parking areas where it operates.

A company spokesman said: “We have decided to give something back to our regular users and loyal customers, and of course to help local shops and traders.

“Of course, the motorist will still need to pay the normal parking tariff, but we wanted to do our bit as a thank you.”
