MYSTERY surrounds whether Marks and Spencer is coming to Broadstone.

Traders in the area say they have been told that the retailer was planning on taking over the Budgens store which is located on the high street.

It comes after supermarket giant Tesco agreed a £3.7bn deal to buy Booker, the cash and carry giant behind the Londis and Budgens convenience chains.

The Budgens of Broadstone in Lower Blandford Road is located next to a Tesco Express - and traders were told that instead of opening another Tesco it would be sold onto M&S.

Marks and Spencer have neither confirmed or denied the rumours that it plans to open a store in the high street.

A comment from the firm said: “We are always looking for new store locations so that we can best serve our customers.

"Whilst we are interested in bringing an additional store to the Poole area, we don’t have any further details to confirm at present.”

Other Budgens stores in the area have faced a difficult time recently. Just last month it was announced that the 34 stores operated by Food Retailer Operations Limited (FROL) face closure after the company went into administration. Stores in Christchurch, Gillingham and Shaftesbury were all affected.
