THREE people have been arrested after a car failed to stop for police in Poole town centre.

Police were called to Towngate Bridge at 4pm on Monday after a black Fiat Punto, which had failed to stop for officers, had been abandoned.

The bridge was closed off and a search was carried out of the area, with the assistance of the NPAS helicopter crew.

A 17-year-old boy, of no fixed abode, and a 23-year-old man, from Poole, were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle. They have been released on bail pending further enquiries until the middle of October and the end of October respectively.

A third man - a 24-year-old from Bere Regis - was arrested on suspicion of possession of drugs, theft from a shop and having in his custody counterfeit notes. He has been released on police bail pending further enquiries until the middle of December.

An eye-witness saw two police cars stop a black car on Towngate Bridge before blocking off the road.

"More police cars arrived, and then someone ran out of the car towards the Dolphin Centre.

"Police with dogs chased after them."
