FIRE crews tackled a house blaze in Upton this afternoon.

Two fire engines from Poole were called to the scene in Moorland Way at 1.30pm, and arrived within a couple of minutes.

They used hose reel jets and breathing apparatus to extinguish the blaze, which was confined to the first floor bedroom.

An aerial platform and support vehicle from Westbourne station were called to the scene to help check the roof space for hot spots.

Although the owners were inside at the time they were alerted to the fire by a smoke detector, and escaped safely.

The blaze was confirmed out by 2.30pm.

Poole Fire Station crew manager Ian Read said: "The crews worked extremely hard and managed to stop the fire spreading beyond the room of origin.

"If they had not the fire could have spread quickly and got into the roof space.

"The owner considered trying to tackle the fire himself but decided to leave the property and call the fire service.

"He took the right course of action.

"Fortunately the family had a hard wired smoke detector which alerted them to the incident.

"I would urge your readers to check their smoke detector and contact us if they need a replacement."

Moorland Way was closed by police while crews fought the fire and checked the scene afterwards.

The fire resulted from a hot bulb in contact with clothing in a cupboard.

Morebus said routes 8 and 9 were being diverted along Seaview Road.
