MORE than 1,000 people have signed a petition to save a busy Poole roundabout.

As part of a scheme to "improve traffic flow" the roundabout on the A349 at the junction of Gravel Hill and Dunyeats Road is due to be replaced with traffic lights.

But campaigners say the £4.3m proposal could lead to even longer queues at peak times.

In response to the plans a petition was launched by Broadstone ward councillor Mike Brooke and Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesman Vikki Slade, which has attracted more than 1,000 signatures.

Poole Borough Council said the eight-month long works, due to start in July, were needed to stabilise an embankment which is "at risk of failing".

The authority said installing the lights would improve traffic flow and also allow a crossing to be installed.

Gravel Hill, which links the A31 to Poole town centre, will be closed entirely to all traffic for three months during the work.
