POOLE has been named one of the UK's top seaside destinations.

The resort was listed as number seven in a guide to the top 10 UK seaside towns on travel website dealchecker.co.uk.

It was included in the list alongside destinations such as Brighton, Newquay and fellow Dorset town Weymouth, which came in first.

Other destinations included were St Andrews in Scotland, Dartmouth in Devon, Hunstanton in Norfolk, Southwold in Suffolk, Whitby in North Yorkshire and Tenby in Pembrokeshire.

Bournemouth was not on the list.

Poole was described as having "the second largest natural harbour after Sydney" and was picked out for its "fine, white sandy beach".

The guide's entry reads: "Poole has the second largest natural harbour after Sydney but that isn't all it has to offer - its fine, white sandy beach attracts everyone to its sunny shores.

"Visit the picturesque Bennetts Water Gardens, explore the Blue Pool and Wareham Bears and even see the Dinosaur Museum."

In February, TripAdvisor named Poole's Sandbanks one of the best beaches in the UK in the TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice awards.

The beach ranked in 10th place with Hengistbury Head in Bournemouth coming in 9th place
