BILLY the cat has found himself embroiled in a political dogfight to secure the post of UK ‘Purr-Minister.’ The rescue kitten, given a home by Mid Dorset & North Poole MP Annette Brooke last summer, hopes to claw his way to success from a shortlist of six feline candidates.

Members of Parliament have put their cats forward for a public vote, to raise the profile of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.

“As I failed in ministerial ambitions for myself I’m now really ambitious for my cat,” joked Annette. “Anyone can vote online, who knows? We could have the next Dorset Purr-Minister.”

Billy is up against five other cats in the race for the top job, including MP Stephen Hammond’s pet Archie and the Rt Hon Caroline Spelman’s Rigel.

The deadline for public voting is Monday, January 26.

Annette’s husband and Borough of Poole councillor Mike Brooke said: “Vote for Billy as he is the obvious choice, he has got a good mentor in Annette, and as a rescue cat he has the right sort of experience and back-ground.”
