A FAMILY affected by autism will take part in a special bike ride to raise funds and awareness.

Chris Thomas, whose grandson Harry was diagnosed with autism two years ago, will be joining dozens of people on the ride for Autism Wessex on Sunday, March 15.

The 30 and 60-mile rides will start from Portfield School in Parley, heading to Ringwood and then through to Brockenhurst and Burley, finishing at Parley.

There will be refreshment stations, signage and mechanical support along the route.

Mr Thomas said: “We are all keen cyclists and we are proud to support this great charity. My family is touched by autism, so we can understand the struggles and complications families can go through.

“My daughter uses the information and advice service at Autism Wessex, who are great at offering support and finding the best way to deal with things, ensuring we are all doing the best for Harry. Harry sometimes finds it difficult doing things we take for granted, so it is a learning curve for us all.”

He added: “I feel like my family is on a journey with autism. We are learning to accept it, get on with it and enjoy it. Harry is not broken and does not need fixing, he is perfect the way he is. I believe autism makes the world a bit more interesting and my hope is that Harry is always happy and can understand and enjoy the world around him as he grows up.”

Becky Chalk, community and events fundraiser, said: “We are delighted Chris and his family are taking part in the bike ride. It’s great to see people taking part to support people in our community affected by autism.

“We hold events to raise funds for our current and future services which help people with autism lead more supported and fulfilling lives.”
