PARKING charges could be on the rise in East Dorset for the first time in 10 years - with some overnight fees likely in Wimborne Minster.

East Dorset District Council will discuss the controversial proposals at a meeting on Tuesday evening.

It follows a 10 year freeze on charges, with the last parking fees rise implemented in 2008.

Charges could be increased in Wimborne and Ferndown town centres - but West Moors, Verwood and Corfe Mullen may remain fee free.

The report going before the scrutiny and policy development committee proposes a 50 pence charge for overnight parking between 6pm and 8am in Wimborne Minster car parks. It is not proposed for Ferndown.

Pay and display tariffs in Allenview South, Co-op, Hanham Road, High Street, King Street and Rowlands Hill car parks in Wimborne, as well as Penny's Lodge in Ferndown could also see daytime increases.

This would affect those paying for half an hour, which would rise from 30 pence to 40 pence and one hour from 60 pence to 70 pence.

Charges for one hour and two hours parking in Allenview North, Allenview West, Leigh Road, Old Road, Poole Road and Pye Corner could also rise by 10 pence to 60 pence and 70 pence respectively.

Changes to parking permits are also being considered.

If the changes are given the go-ahead, the expected income from parking fees and charges next year is £637,508 - an extra £48,848.

The report adds: "Unfortunately as costs have increased, the council can no longer maintain a freeze and must now consider increasing charges. It is recognised that this is an emotive issue, however, the need to have a fully funded and sustainable service is necessary."

Cllr Ray Bryan, cabinet portfolio holder for performance, said: “The council has chosen not to increase charges for 10 years but now must consider reviewing that policy as costs to run and maintain our car parks increases.

"The proposed tariff increase of 10p for only some shorter stays would still mean car parking charges in East Dorset remain less than in neighbouring areas.”

If the proposals are approved, a public consultation will take place in October and November.
