ENGINEERS say a sinkhole that opened up in a residential street in Ferndown is due to be completely repaired this weekend.
As reported in the Daily Echo, the “extremely deep” hole in Coppice Avenue was spotted by a dog-walker a week ago.
Although the hole in the carriageway measured just 30 inches across, the sinkhole covered a large area beneath the surface of the road.
Jim Savage called police after spotting the depression while walking rescue dog Dudley.
He said: “I was just out on a walk when I spotted it in the middle of the road.
“Cars were going past and missing it by a tyre.
“I realised straight away that it was a sinkhole.”
One resident said: “It’s quite worrying.”
A Dorset County Council spokesperson said: “The original pipes have been leaking for some time and have undermined the road.
“We’ll be pumping out the rain water and then renewing the pipework from the drain covers to the main storm drain.
“The rain this week has slowed us down but, weather permitting, we hope to have the repairs completed by Saturday morning.”
